Tottenham now linked with move to sign £21m star as Frank eyes 6ft 4in striker

Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close watch on Atlético Madrid forward Alexander Sorloth as they consider making a move before the end of the transfer window.

Reports from Tuttojuve suggest the North London side are weighing up the possibility of adding the Norwegian striker to their squad, although competition for his signature is expected to be fierce.

Sorloth’s career has taken him across Europe, with mixed fortunes along the way. He first arrived in the Premier League back in 2018, when Crystal Palace signed him from Danish club FC Midtjylland.

His time in England was far from successful, as he struggled to adapt to the pace and demands of the league, failing to leave a mark at Selhurst Park. Yet his story did not end there.

A move to Spain reignited his form, with a spell at Real Sociedad bringing him 24 goals in 90 matches. That return set the stage for his transfer to Villarreal, where he showed even greater efficiency, scoring an impressive 26 goals in just 41 appearances.

Last summer, Atlético Madrid brought him in, initially as a backup option for Julián Álvarez. Despite often being second choice, Sorloth has delivered strongly in front of goal, finding the net 24 times in 54 matches.

His ability to consistently score, even without being the focal point of the attack, has kept him on the radar of several clubs searching for a reliable centre-forward.

With Álvarez now firmly established as Diego Simeone’s number one striker, there is speculation that Sorloth may be tempted to leave in search of more regular opportunities.

Tottenham are one of the sides tracking him closely, sensing that this could be the right moment to swoop.

Spurs’ interest stems from their desire to bring in an experienced forward capable of making an immediate impact. At 29 years old and standing at 6ft 4in, Sorloth offers both physical presence and proven finishing ability.

His aerial strength makes him a particular threat, and that quality has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. Newcastle United are also said to be watching the player carefully, with manager Eddie Howe believed to be keen on adding more height and power to his attack. If both clubs step up their pursuit, Atlético may find themselves in a strong position to negotiate.

Sorloth remains under contract at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for another three years, meaning Atlético are under no pressure to sell.

Any interested club would likely need to meet a valuation close to his £21 million price tag on Transfermarkt. For Tottenham, that raises the question of whether this is the best way to invest their transfer budget, given the options already available in attack.

Thomas Frank, who recently took charge of the team, has placed his trust in Richarlison as his first-choice striker. The Brazilian has started recent matches against Burnley and Manchester City, scoring twice and showing the kind of energy Frank values.

Speaking about him, the coach was clear in his stance, saying Richarlison is his current number nine and praising his strong performances as well as his role for the Brazil national team.

Behind him, Spurs also have Dominic Solanke, who, despite dealing with recurring fitness issues, has shown himself to be dependable whenever available.

Young striker Mathys Tel is another option, and while his missed penalty in the Super Cup final was a setback, he is determined to prove himself this season and add depth to the squad’s frontline.

Considering this depth, many believe Tottenham should be cautious about spending heavily on another striker when other areas of the squad require more urgent attention.

Midfield creativity has been a particular concern, with a lack of consistent attacking spark from that area of the pitch. Strengthening in that position could arguably offer more value than adding another centre-forward, especially one who may not be guaranteed a starting role.

Sorloth’s record in Spain shows he can deliver goals, and his physicality gives him a profile that suits the Premier League.

However, whether Tottenham truly need him is another question. With strong competition already in the squad and pressing needs elsewhere, the smarter move might be to hold back and focus their resources on a playmaker who can link midfield to attack more effectively.

Still, with the transfer window unpredictable as ever, Spurs will continue to keep their eyes on developments in Madrid, ready to act if circumstances align.
