Tottenham are now on the verge of signing ‘outstanding’ player after Mathys Tel rejected them
Tottenham Hotspur finally have some positive news amid a challenging season that has seen them struggle both on and off the pitch. Sitting 15th in the Premier League table and failing to secure a single outfield signing, the club has faced multiple setbacks in the January transfer window.
Randal Kolo Muani turned down a move to North London earlier in the window, and recent reports confirmed that Mathys Tel has also rejected Tottenham despite his desire to play in the Premier League.
This series of disappointments has made January particularly frustrating for Spurs, but there is now optimism as they close in on a key defensive signing.
The club initially prioritized signing a striker, a need that became even more urgent after Dominic Solanke suffered an injury that will sideline him for over a month.
However, with Tel unwilling to join, Tottenham shifted their focus to strengthening the defense. Reports suggest that Spurs are on the verge of finalizing a deal for Fikayo Tomori, with Calciomercato revealing that negotiations have reached the final stages. Tottenham have submitted an offer worth £25.1 million (€30 million), including bonuses, to secure the AC Milan defender.

This bid has reportedly put them ahead of Aston Villa and Juventus in the race to sign Tomori, who has been widely praised for his performances. Joe Cole previously described him as “outstanding” on TNT Sports, and his addition would address a major defensive issue for Spurs.
Gianluca Di Marzio has also reported that negotiations have progressed significantly and that Tottenham could complete the deal very soon. This development comes at a crucial time for the club, as injuries have severely weakened their backline.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have both missed large portions of the season, while Destiny Udogie has been sidelined in recent weeks.
Additionally, Radu Dragusin has now suffered an injury, further depleting Postecoglou’s defensive options. Bringing in Tomori would provide much-needed stability at the back and strengthen the squad as they attempt to recover from a disappointing first half of the season.
Despite nearing an agreement for Tomori, Tottenham still need to address their lack of firepower up front. With Tel declining their offer, Postecoglou must find an alternative striker before the transfer window closes. Failing to secure a forward would leave Spurs in a difficult position, as they are already struggling to convert chances and maintain consistency in attack.
The pressure now falls on Daniel Levy to make a decisive move in the final days of the window. The lack of attacking reinforcements would be a major disappointment, considering the club’s struggles and the need for additional goal-scoring options.
Time is running out, and Tottenham must act swiftly to ensure they do not finish the window without a quality striker. While the imminent signing of Tomori is a significant boost, the club cannot afford to neglect their offensive needs.
The final days of the transfer window will be crucial, and it remains to be seen whether Levy and his team can salvage what has been a frustrating month for Spurs supporters.
