Exclusive: Player wants out in January, Tottenham to begin negotiations

Sergio Reguilon, Tottenham Hotspur’s 27-year-old defender, appears set to seek a January exit as he aims to reestablish himself with regular first-team action.

Reguilon, who hasn’t featured in the matchday squads for either the Premier League or Europa League this season, plans to negotiate a contract termination with Tottenham in the coming transfer window, as reported by sources close to the situation.

Reguilon’s priority is securing a fresh opportunity that would offer him consistent playing time, which he views as essential for recapturing his peak form.

La Liga clubs Sevilla and Getafe have expressed interest in the Spanish left-back, and both are prepared to initiate discussions with Tottenham and Reguilon’s representatives.

Sevilla, where Reguilon enjoyed a successful loan spell previously, sees him as an asset who brings valuable experience to their defense. Their goal is to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, and Reguilon’s familiarity with La Liga could facilitate a quick transition back into Spanish football.

Getafe has also emerged as a potential destination, interested in acquiring Reguilon on a free transfer. The Spanish defender’s experience in La Liga positions him as an appealing option for either club, and his immediate familiarity with the league would likely allow him to make an impact swiftly.

A return to Spain may provide Reguilon the platform he needs to impress consistently, an opportunity he has struggled to find at Tottenham.

Tottenham, for their part, support Reguilon’s decision to move on. Allowing him to depart would reduce the club’s wage expenditure, freeing up financial resources for new transfers or potential contract renewals for other key players.

Given Tottenham’s considerable depth in the left-back position, Reguilon’s departure would also enable a more streamlined defensive roster without significantly affecting the team’s strength.

Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, both preferred options at left-back, have secured spots ahead of Reguilon, which has limited his opportunities under the current system at Tottenham.

This depth in the squad means Tottenham would be open to parting ways with Reguilon, viewing it as a practical resolution for both parties.

As January approaches, Reguilon has a strong chance to rejuvenate his career with a move back to Spain, whether at Sevilla, where he enjoyed a previous stint, or with Getafe, a team equally keen to bolster their defense.

At 27, he has the potential to rediscover his form, contribute meaningfully, and establish himself as a key player in La Liga once again.
