Djed Spence speaks out on surprise U-turn as he makes ‘difficult’ Tottenham admission

Nottingham Forest promotion-winner Djed Spence recently reflected on his challenging journey at Tottenham, stating, “It hasn’t been easy.” Spence, who joined Spurs in July 2022, played a pivotal role in Forest’s promotion to the Premier League after an impressive loan spell from Middlesbrough.

However, since joining Tottenham, he’s been loaned out multiple times, spending stints at Rennes, Leeds United, and Genoa.

This summer, there were uncertainties surrounding Spence’s future with Tottenham. Yet, after an impressive pre-season that caught manager Ange Postecoglou’s attention, he secured a new contract and has since made four appearances this season.

Reflecting on his experiences, Spence shared insights with Tottenham’s official matchday program, expressing that his career is finally gaining traction. “Pre-season was great; I felt sharp and prepared,” he remarked.

Determined and motivated, Spence acknowledged he felt he had “a point to prove.” His mindset was resolute, as he aimed to showcase his capabilities and establish his worth.

Describing his mentality, he said, “I came in knowing exactly what I needed to do, determined to give my best and continue moving forward.” Despite his newfound progress, he admitted his Tottenham career hasn’t been smooth, pointing to various challenges he’s encountered.

“But you learn from everything,” he shared, noting the growth he’s gained from experiences abroad, adjusting to new cultures, and being far from family. Each moment, he believes, has fortified his mental resilience and provided valuable life lessons.

Spence also opened up about the physical setbacks he’s faced, including injuries that have hindered his progress. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of mental strength, remaining focused, training diligently, and surrounding himself with positive influences.

These elements, he believes, are key to reaching greatness and fulfilling his potential as a player. Reflecting on the past few years, he acknowledged they’ve been personally challenging, yet he remains optimistic about the future.
