‘Awful’: Jamie Carragher says £43M Tottenham star have been really bad this season

Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the Premier League season has been a bit mixed, with moments of brilliance and some lingering questions.

The team is now unbeaten in their last four games across all competitions, but it wasn’t long ago that doubts were raised about how Ange Postecoglou’s side would perform this season.

While their recent form has been promising, they currently sit in eighth place, a position far from where they would ideally like to be.

Jamie Carragher recently shared his thoughts on Tottenham’s season during an episode of The Overlap. He focused on the team’s defensive issues, which have been a cause for concern.

Despite their improved form, Carragher isn’t entirely convinced, particularly when it comes to the individual performances of Cristian Romero.

Tottenham struggled defensively towards the end of last season, and although they’ve managed to tighten things up, Carragher highlighted Romero’s poor performances this term.

He acknowledged that, while Tottenham’s defensive players are talented, Romero, who cost £43 million, hasn’t lived up to expectations so far this season.

Carragher emphasized that Tottenham’s backline includes players with strong individual abilities. He pointed out that Pedro Porro at right-back is decent, Udogie showed great promise last season, and Micky van de Ven, known for his lightning speed, has impressed many.

However, Romero, despite being a World Cup winner, has been underperforming in Carragher’s eyes. He expressed his disappointment with Romero, noting that the Argentine hasn’t been up to standard this season.

According to Carragher, although nothing glaringly wrong stands out, Spurs continue to allow too many chances and goals.

On paper, Tottenham’s defense appears to be solid this season, especially compared to last year’s struggles. They’ve conceded only five goals in their first six Premier League matches, which is actually a better record than Manchester City and on par with Arsenal.

While Romero has had some slip-ups, overall, the defense has been more stable than it was last season.

Although Tottenham had severe defensive issues in the previous campaign, their backline has looked much more composed this season, even though a few moments of uncertainty still exist.

Romero, despite Carragher’s criticism, has been relatively reliable, but there’s still room for improvement.

Tottenham will need to keep building on their recent momentum if they want to challenge for a higher spot in the Premier League table and maintain a more consistent defensive record throughout the season.
