Tottenham Hotspur appears to be finding their form after a rocky start to the season, but they now face a crucial Premier League match against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Both teams are desperate for a win, with United not starting the season well under Erik ten Hag

Tottenham and United are currently level in the standings with seven points after five matches, though Tottenham has the edge in attack, having scored nine goals compared to United’s five. Ange Postecoglou will aim to exploit this attacking advantage to secure a significant victory against a struggling United side.

Tottenham’s recent record at Old Trafford has been mixed. Their last five visits to the Theatre of Dreams have seen them secure just one win, a 6-1 demolition in 2020, followed by two losses and a draw.

This record will be in the back of Postecoglou’s mind as he prepares his side for the challenge ahead. Tottenham heads into the fixture fresh from a 3-0 victory over Qarabag in their Europa League opener, a match where they played most of the game with ten men following Radu Dragusin’s early red card.

However, the win was overshadowed by an injury to captain Heung-min Son, who hobbled off in the second half. His fitness will be a key talking point ahead of the United clash, and it remains to be seen whether he will feature in the starting lineup.

Postecoglou is expected to make several changes to the lineup for Sunday’s match. In goal, Guglielmo Vicario has been ever-present since joining from Empoli and is certain to retain his spot.

Right-back Pedro Porro, who was rested in the Europa League, will be vital in defending against United’s pacy attackers, while Cristian Romero, another player rested midweek, will return to anchor the defense.

In attack, Dejan Kulusevski has been one of Tottenham’s standout players this season. Although he has been deployed in a central midfield role in recent matches, Son’s potential absence could see him revert to his more familiar position on the right wing.

Kulusevski’s tireless work ethic and creativity make him an essential part of Postecoglou’s plans. James Maddison will pull the strings from the attacking midfield position, having started the season strongly.

His passing and vision could be the key to unlocking United’s defense, and his statistics back this up—he ranks in the top 1% of attacking midfielders for passes attempted and progressive passes across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year.

On the left wing, Brennan Johnson is expected to start in place of Son. Johnson has faced criticism for his performances early in the season but has responded with three goals in his last three matches.

He will look to continue that form against United. Up front, Dominic Solanke, who signed for Tottenham in a club-record £65 million deal this summer, is likely to lead the line. After a slow start, Solanke has found his feet with two goals and an assist in his last three games.
