Ange cannot afford ‘Big Blow’, Tottenham ace could be out till late December

Rodrigo Bentancur faces a potential 12-match ban, which could have a significant impact on Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur.

This would deal a major blow to the squad, especially considering Bentancur’s integral role in midfield. The controversy stems from a comment Bentancur made during an interview in Uruguay, where he suggested that Son Heung-Min and his cousins “all look the same” [The Standard, 13 September].

Although he has privately apologized to Son, the FA is still expected to hand down a substantial punishment, which could leave a major gap in Tottenham’s midfield.

Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, weighed in on the situation, noting how crucial Bentancur is to the team’s current setup.

Robinson pointed out that Postecoglou typically plays with two holding midfielders, and Bentancur is often one of them. Losing Bentancur for an extended period would undoubtedly create a significant imbalance in the squad, which Robinson believes is already overloaded with wide players and attacking midfielders.

While there are potential replacements in the form of Pape Matar Sarr or Archie Gray, Robinson suggests the team can’t afford to lose a key player like Bentancur, especially in such a critical area.

Bentancur has become a fan favorite at Tottenham, regularly partnering with Yves Bissouma or Sarr in central midfield.

However, if the FA enforces the ban, Postecoglou could be without one of his most reliable players for up to 12 matches.

Despite having other options, such as Bissouma, Sarr, Gray, and Lucas Bergvall, Bentancur’s absence will undoubtedly be felt. The manager will need to rely on his squad depth, but replacing a player of Bentancur’s experience and quality is no small task.

Adding to the challenge, Bentancur has already been cautioned three times in just four Premier League matches this season.

Even without the looming suspension for his inappropriate comment, he could easily face additional time on the sidelines if he accumulates more yellow cards.

If the 12-match ban is enforced, Bentancur wouldn’t be eligible to return until late December, leaving a sizable gap in Tottenham’s midfield until the end of the year.

While Tottenham’s midfield has options, Bentancur’s potential suspension will place extra pressure on Postecoglou to find the right balance without one of his most dependable players.
