Late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson saved Tottenham from a shocking defeat against Coventry in the Carabao Cup, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Spurs appeared on the verge of back-to-back disappointments after their painful derby loss to Arsenal, as Coventry took a deserved lead through Brandon Thomas-Asante in the 63rd minute.
Earlier, Ange Postecoglou’s decision to substitute Lucas Bergvall was met with boos from the traveling Spurs supporters, as the team struggled to find their rhythm.
Coventry’s Championship side looked set to cause an upset, with Tottenham unable to break through their defense for most of the match.
The momentum seemed entirely in Coventry’s favor after Thomas-Asante’s strike, as Spurs found themselves chasing the game.
However, as the clock ticked down and the pressure mounted, Tottenham showed resilience. With just three minutes remaining, Djed Spence stepped up to find the equalizer, bringing hope back to the traveling fans. His late goal changed the dynamics of the game, shifting momentum back in Tottenham’s favor.
Even with extra time looming, Spurs weren’t done. In stoppage time, Rodrigo Bentancur found an opening and played a perfect pass to Brennan Johnson.
With composure, Johnson chipped the Coventry keeper to give Tottenham a 2-1 lead in the 92nd minute.
The late goal not only secured Tottenham’s place in the next round but also ignited celebrations from their fans, who began singing about their hopes for Wembley.
The match was a test of Tottenham’s character, and they ultimately passed.
Though Coventry put up a fierce fight and deserved their early lead, Postecoglou’s team showed their ability to respond when it mattered most.
