Postecoglou must be ready to axe out Tottenham ace, Sutton dubs him a ‘Massive disappointment’

Brennan Johnson has had a challenging time at Tottenham since his move last summer. The Welsh winger has managed to score just five goals in the Premier League under manager Ange Postecoglou, despite providing 10 assists last season.

However, with creative forces like James Maddison, Son Heung-Min, and Dejan Kulusevski in the squad, Tottenham is still in search of more reliable goalscorers to support Dominic Solanke in the attack.

Football pundit Chris Sutton, speaking on the “It’s All Kicking Off” podcast on September 16, shared his concerns about Tottenham’s offensive struggles.

He highlighted the need for more quality on the wings and was particularly critical of Johnson’s performance since joining Spurs. “I think Brennan Johnson has been a massive disappointment since going to Tottenham,” Sutton said.

He added that Johnson’s creativity and ability to score from wide positions have been lacking, commenting that the player has not yet found his “shooting boots.”

Johnson’s inability to make a significant impact has been evident in recent matches.

After Tottenham suffered consecutive defeats to Newcastle United and Arsenal, Postecoglou will likely be under pressure to make tactical adjustments, including addressing Johnson’s form.

The winger has yet to score this season, and his overall offensive contributions have been underwhelming. His shooting accuracy is low, with only 43% of his shots on target, and his expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) metrics stand at 0.79 and 0.24 respectively, according to FotMob.

These numbers show that Johnson is struggling to convert opportunities and create chances at a level expected of him.

Johnson’s performance in the North London Derby against Arsenal on September 15 was another example of his difficulties.

He was substituted after 68 minutes, having only managed one shot on target from two attempts. His dribbling success rate was 50%, and he won just 33% of his ground duels, highlighting his struggle to make an impact in key moments of the game.

His inability to influence matches at a consistent level has put his place in the starting lineup in jeopardy.

Despite his struggles at the club level, Johnson remains an important player for the Welsh national team, where he has earned regular call-ups.

However, his poor club form is reflected in his statistical rankings. According to FBref, Johnson ranks in the bottom 43rd percentile for non-penalty goals and the bottom 54th percentile for assists.

These figures indicate that, while Johnson is talented, his current level of performance is below what is expected of a player in his position at a top Premier League club.

With competition for places heating up, Postecoglou has decisions to make. Players like Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert are more than capable of filling Johnson’s role on the pitch, adding further pressure on the Welshman to improve.

As Tottenham prepare for their upcoming match against Coventry on September 18, it remains to be seen whether Postecoglou will persist with Johnson or explore alternative options in an attempt to boost the team’s attacking output.

The situation for Johnson is clear—he must improve his productivity in front of goal and contribute more consistently in wide areas. Tottenham’s need for more goalscorers to support their creative midfielders is apparent, and Johnson’s current form doesn’t offer the solution.

If he fails to turn things around soon, he risks losing his spot in the starting lineup to other players eager to make their mark.
