Ange must axe out 96% Tottenham star after dreadful moment v Arsenal
Ange Postecoglou may soon face a difficult decision regarding one of Tottenham’s most valuable players, Cristian Romero.
The Argentine defender has been a key figure in Spurs’ lineup, particularly after his World Cup-winning campaign.
However, his recent performances suggest that Postecoglou might need to do something unexpected—bench Romero, at least temporarily.
Romero has been a solid presence in Tottenham’s defense, but his form in recent matches has been concerning.
In the 1-1 draw against Leicester City on August 19, Romero was arguably at fault for Leicester’s equalizer. His struggles continued in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on September 1, where he again failed to perform to the standard expected of him.
The most significant lapse came during the North London derby on September 15. In a match that holds immense importance for Tottenham, Romero’s defensive vulnerabilities were once more on display.
He was outmuscled by Gabriel, allowing the Arsenal defender to score the winning goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Given these recent performances, Postecoglou may have to consider taking Romero out of the starting lineup when Tottenham face Brentford on September 21.
A brief spell out of the spotlight could allow Romero to regain his focus and confidence, giving him a chance to rediscover his form before returning to the pitch.
Romero’s performance against Arsenal highlights why this move might be necessary. Although he made two clearances and two tackles during the match, these efforts were overshadowed by his shortcomings.
According to Sofascore, Romero was dribbled past once, and his long-ball accuracy left much to be desired, completing just one out of three attempts.
He also gave away a foul and won only three of his five ground duels, which demonstrates that his usual sharpness and defensive solidity were lacking.
While his 96 percent passing accuracy is a positive note, this stat alone cannot mask his defensive struggles.
Tottenham’s defensive unit as a whole has been impacted by Romero’s decline in form. He is an influential figure at the back, and when he is not performing at his best, the entire defense suffers.
Despite his importance to the team, it may now be the right time for Postecoglou to temporarily remove Romero from the starting eleven.
A short break from action could provide Romero with the opportunity to reset and come back stronger for the rest of the season.
Romero’s ability on the ball is undeniable, as shown by his passing stats and moments of composure in possession.
However, his primary role is to anchor the defense, and if he cannot provide the stability needed at the back, Tottenham’s ambitions in the Premier League could be at risk.
With the competitive nature of the league and the stakes rising in every match, Postecoglou cannot afford to keep a struggling player in such a crucial position.
Spurs have options at the back, and the manager could explore a temporary change in personnel to address the defensive issues.
Rotating players in defense could also send a message to the squad that underperformance won’t be tolerated, regardless of a player’s status or past achievements.
It’s clear that Romero’s form needs to improve, and stepping back for a game or two might be the most effective way to motivate him to regain his sharpness.
As Tottenham prepares to take on Brentford, all eyes will be on how Postecoglou handles the situation. Will he stick with Romero in the hope that the Argentine can bounce back, or will he make the bold decision to leave him out of the starting lineup?
One thing is certain: Tottenham needs a strong defense to remain competitive this season, and Postecoglou must ensure that every player on the pitch is performing at their highest level.
