‘I’m disappointed’: Darren Ambrose gutted at transfer deal Tottenham are about to conclude after terms agreed

Tottenham Hotspur is gearing up for the new Premier League season with an evolving squad under the guidance of manager Ange Postecoglou, who is entering his second season at the helm.

The pre-season has seen positive developments, with the team securing two wins from two matches, and several players showcasing impressive performances.

One of the most significant moves this summer is the acquisition of Archie Gray from Leeds United. The young talent has generated considerable excitement among Tottenham fans, and his pre-season performances have lived up to the hype.

Gray’s exceptional start suggests he might secure a starting position in the opening game of the season, potentially pushing a senior player out of the lineup.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who struggled for consistent game time last season, appears to be the senior player most likely to make way for Gray.

Reports indicate that Hojbjerg is on the verge of leaving Tottenham, with personal terms agreed with Marseille. Darren Ambrose, speaking to talkSPORT, expressed his disappointment at this potential move, highlighting Hojbjerg’s passion and experience as valuable assets to the club.

“Spurs, this is my club that I support, they have agreed to loan midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Marseille, with a £17 million option to buy him,” said Ambrose. “I am disappointed with that. I know he gets a lot of stick. I think sometimes unnecessary. It’s like marmite for Spurs supporters. Sometimes they aren’t having him, then they are 50-50 with him. But I like him. I think he could add a lot, in terms of experience as well. You could tell that he is passionate about the football club when he comes on. I think he had a good Euros as well. I am disappointed if this goes ahead.”

Despite being at the peak of his career, the 28-year-old midfielder only completed 90 minutes on four occasions in the Premier League last season. This limited playtime under Postecoglou suggests that Hojbjerg’s future at Tottenham was always in doubt.

His performances at Euro 2024, particularly his Man of the Match display against England, demonstrated his capabilities when given the opportunity to play a more advanced role. However, his deeper position at Spurs has restricted his impact, making a move to Marseille, managed by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, an appealing option.

Hojbjerg’s departure from Tottenham appears to be the right move for both the player and the club. While his experience and passion will be missed, the arrival of young talents like Archie Gray signifies a new direction for Tottenham.

As the new season approaches, Postecoglou’s squad is shaping up to compete on multiple fronts, with an emphasis on developing and integrating fresh talent into the team dynamics.
