Reports: Tottenham agree midfielder sale in deal worth £16.8M

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Ligue 1 giants Marseille for a deal valued at €20 million (£16.8 million), according to multiple reports.

The Danish midfielder, who joined Spurs from Southampton in 2020, is set to end his four-year stint in North London.

Hojbjerg has been a consistent figure for Tottenham since his arrival from Bayern Munich via Southampton. During his time at Spurs, he featured in 145 out of a possible 152 Premier League matches, showcasing his reliability and durability.

However, under the management of Ange Postecoglou, his role shifted last season. The Greek-Australian manager’s expansive style of play often favored other midfielders like Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma, and Rodrigo Bentancur, pushing Hojbjerg down the pecking order.

Postecoglou’s preference for a more dynamic midfield saw Hojbjerg frequently used as a substitute to help preserve leads. Despite his reduced starting role, Hojbjerg’s experience and tactical acumen made him a valuable asset off the bench.

His potential transfer to Marseille reflects both a strategic move for Spurs and an opportunity for Hojbjerg to continue playing regular first-team football.

While Atletico Madrid had shown interest in Hojbjerg, it is Marseille that have secured a deal for the midfielder, according to The Athletic and other sources.

The agreed package will see Tottenham receive €20 million (£16.8 million), with €14.2 million (£12 million) paid upfront. This transaction is viewed favorably by Tottenham, especially given Hojbjerg’s contract situation, which had only a year remaining.

Recouping a transfer fee for Hojbjerg, rather than risking him leaving on a free transfer, aligns with Tottenham’s strategic financial planning. The funds will support the club’s ongoing investments in young talents, such as Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

Gray, an 18-year-old midfielder, joined Spurs on a long-term deal that could eventually be worth £40 million to Leeds United. Similarly, Bergvall, a highly-rated prospect, chose Tottenham over Barcelona to further his development.

Tottenham’s transfer activity is not expected to stop with Hojbjerg’s departure. The club has already seen Joe Rodon and Troy Parrott leave on permanent deals, and more outgoings are anticipated.

Additionally, Spurs are in the market for a new striker to bolster their attacking options. With Son Heung-min currently leading the line following Harry Kane’s departure 11 months ago, Tottenham are linked with several strikers, including Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

As Tottenham prepares for the 2024/25 season, the departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg marks a significant shift in the club’s midfield dynamics. While Hojbjerg’s experience and leadership will be missed, the strategic reinvestment in younger talents and the pursuit of new signings reflect Tottenham’s long-term vision under Postecoglou.

The upcoming season will be a critical period for Spurs as they aim to build on their existing strengths and integrate new talents into their squad.
