Ange couldn’t hide as Tottenham learn asking price for 24yr old after Postecoglou obsession revealed
Tottenham Hotspur have identified the key elements needed to secure the highly sought-after Lille striker Jonathan David this summer.
The Canadian international has been a recurring name in transfer speculations, and this window might finally see his departure from Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Jonathan David made his initial mark at Belgian side Gent before moving to Lille in a £23.2 million deal in the summer of 2020.
His debut season was nothing short of spectacular, as he played a crucial role in Lille’s triumphant 2020-21 Ligue 1 campaign, temporarily dethroning Paris Saint-Germain.
David’s success didn’t stop there. Over the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, he netted 26 goals across all competitions and added nine assists last season. His international record is equally impressive, with 28 goals and 16 assists in 54 senior appearances for Canada.
David’s recent performance at the Copa America, where he helped Canada reach the semi-finals and clinched a bronze medal, further solidified his reputation.
With just one year left on his contract, Lille is keen to cash in on David this summer, despite the risk of losing him for free next year.
Reports from Football Insider suggest that Lille is demanding a £25 million fee for the striker. This sum is within reach for several interested parties, including Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, and West Ham United.
Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, is reportedly “obsessed” with signing a new striker this summer, and David fits the bill perfectly. Postecoglou briefly worked with Harry Kane before his transfer to Bayern Munich.
Subsequently, Tottenham’s striking options were limited, with Richarlison and Son Heung-min sharing the responsibilities. The potential sale of Richarlison and Son’s contract expiring in 2025 makes acquiring a new striker a top priority for Tottenham.
Adding Jonathan David to the roster would address a significant need for Tottenham. The club is also monitoring Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, but he comes with a higher price tag than David.
Tottenham has already offloaded Republic of Ireland international Troy Parrott to AZ Alkmaar for £6.7 million, making room for a new striker.
Securing Jonathan David would be a strategic move for Tottenham Hotspur, bolstering their attacking options and aligning with Ange Postecoglou’s vision for the team. David’s proven track record at both club and international levels makes him a valuable asset.
As the summer transfer window progresses, Tottenham’s pursuit of Jonathan David is one to watch, promising an exciting development in their quest to strengthen the squad for the upcoming season.
