‘superb’ £60m forward ready to sign Tottenham Hotspurs – Gary Lineker reveals

If early summer reports were to be believed, Ange Postecoglou desperately wanted to add a wide-forward to his squad who could also play centrally.Tottenham aren’t after a typical number nine, an Ivan Toney type per say. Some Spurs fans may feel that’s a slight mistake, but Postecoglou will stick by his convictions, having preferred a similar set-up during his success at Celtic too.Japan’s Kyogo Furuhashi was the figurehead of Postecoglou’s title-winning team, who was hardly a target man.

That being said, Postecoglou appears to favour tactically-versatile forwards, players who can fulfil a role in a languid front-three.

And to that end, TBR Football recently shared that Tottenham had made an enquiry to sign Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

Postecoglou is thought to be a huge fan of Eze’s, but perhaps he’s even been surprised by his role for England at Euro 2024.

Gary Lineker says ‘superb’ Tottenham target Eberechi Eze never gives the ball away

Initially taken as a left-winger by Gareth Southgate, Eze has ended up fulfilling a role as a left-sided defender late in games.

And testament to his talent, Eze has been ‘superb’ for his country in the position – at least that’s what Gary Lineker thought.

Lineker was speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast shortly after England’s win on Saturday, when Eze earned his seventh cap for his country, playing 42 minutes.

Eze played as a left wing-back again, and although Postecoglou is unlikely to envisage the 26-year-old in such a role in north London, it only adds to what he can offer Spurs.

Praising his composure in those minutes, Lineker said: “I thought Eze was superb. I mean, he doesn’t give the ball away. He looks so calm and confident.”

And if the Euros was seen as a test of whether Eze can cope at the highest level, well he’s certainly passed with flying colours.

Eze is perhaps the most versatile player at Southgate’s disposal, possibly explaining why he was one of a few players picked ahead of Tottenham’s James Maddison.

And although Tottenham are currently unwilling to pay Eze’s £60m release clause, perhaps the two names mentioned above could soon be excelling in the same eleven.
