Exclusive: Tottenham hijack Villa swap deal, Spurs now in pole position to seal

Tottenham Hotspur have surged ahead in the race to sign midfielder Weston McKennie, outpacing Aston Villa in the pursuit of the Juventus star, according to sources from Football Insider.

Aston Villa were reportedly close to finalizing a complex swap deal involving McKennie and Juventus teammate Samuel Iling-Junior, which would see Douglas Luiz head to the Italian giants.

However, talks between Villa and Juventus have stalled, creating an opportunity for other clubs to make their move.

Sources indicate that Tottenham has hijacked Villa’s move by negotiating a cut-price fee for McKennie, valued at around £15 million.

With the midfielder’s contract with Juventus set to expire in June 2025, Spurs have entered into discussions to secure the 25-year-old USA international.

McKennie had been on the verge of joining Aston Villa as part of a swap deal that also included a £20 million payment to Villa.

However, the recent stall in negotiations has left McKennie’s future in doubt. Tottenham has seized this opportunity, opening talks with Juventus to bring McKennie to North London.

McKennie’s previous stint in the Premier League with Leeds United during the 2022-23 season was less than stellar, as he managed only one assist in 20 appearances.

However, his return to Juventus saw a resurgence in form, with McKennie starting 33 of his 38 appearances last season and contributing 10 assists.

Ange Postecoglou, entering his second season with Tottenham, aims to revamp the squad following a fifth-place finish, just behind Aston Villa.

Football Insider has reported that Spurs are willing to listen to offers for nine of their senior players, aiming to free up funds for new signings and strengthen the team’s competitive edge.

Bringing McKennie to Tottenham could significantly bolster the midfield, adding versatility and creativity. His experience in Serie A, coupled with his international credentials, makes him a valuable asset.

The American midfielder’s ability to contribute both offensively and defensively aligns with Postecoglou’s strategic vision for Spurs.

The negotiations between Juventus and Tottenham have intensified, focusing on a £15 million deal for McKennie. This potential signing reflects Tottenham’s proactive approach in the transfer market, aiming to secure top talent at competitive prices.

Tottenham’s strategy involves balancing the squad by offloading certain senior players. This approach not only generates funds but also creates space for new talent like McKennie.

By strategically managing their roster, Spurs aim to enhance their overall team performance and achieve higher standings in the Premier League.
