He’s an idiot.. Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cindy blast treatment of Tottenham Hotspur star
Tottenham Hotspur v Everton could make for interesting viewing next season.
Not because it’s Ange Postecoglou’s all-action and fearless style of play against Sean Dyche’s methodical and defensively strong methods.
Or because of the entertaining 2-2 draw they dished it in February which saw Jarrad Branthwaite scoring a stoppage-time equaliser.
But because of a certain Neal Maupay and how he managed to wind up the Tottenham fanbase whilst on loan at Brentford this season.
When Brentford were beaten 3-2 at their London rivals in January, Maupay opened the scoring and proceeded to do the darts celebration – seemingly mocking James Maddison.
Since then, Maupay has continued to rub salt into the wounds, including mocking the Tottenham man when he was axed from England’s Euro 2024 squad.
For Maupay himself, he sees this as ‘banter’ and he addressed it that way during a recent interview.
But Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara haven’t seen the funny side as they think the Frenchman is an ‘idiot’ and his so-called banter isn’t funny, as they told talkSPORT.
Some would argue that you need these types of characters in the game because they lighten up the mood and make it entertaining, but others see it as crossing the line.
Neal Maupay v James Maddison“
He’s an idiot, isn’t he,” said Cundy about Maupay, with O’Hara agreeing and adding “It’s just muggy, isn’t it?!”
Cundy then wondered: “I don’t know what he is trying to achieve by it – as a fellow professional. You don’t do that. I know there is banter on Twitter and social media. But that, to me, was, I don’t know what his objective was. What was he trying to achieve by it? Other than a cheap laugh. It’s not needed and it’s not funny. I think he has made himself look like a right idiot.”
O’Hara added: “He is trying to get a laugh at James Maddison’s expense or James Maddison’s pain, which I don’t agree with. He’s not your mate. If he was your best mate, even that would be out of order. So, to say, ’it’s a bit of banter’. Well, it’s not banter, is it? James Maddison is devastated that he hasn’t gone to the Euros and you are making fun of it, so it’s not banter.”
Tottenham need James Maddison back to his best
After an injury-hit debut campaign, this rest, albeit unwanted for Maddison, will do him and his club form wonders.
The playmaker’s performances dropped off when he returned from injury and he was rightfully dropped for games against Chelsea and Liverpool.
In the end, it cost him a place at Euro 2024 and he can have very little to argue about.
But where Maddison can prove people wrong is by getting back to his best next season because, on his day, he is one of the best in the Premier League.
