Mourinho Fenerbahce nice to secure Hojbjerg signature for £20m

Tottenham have a busy summer 2024 transfer window ahead of them as they look to get Ange Postecoglou closer to the Champions League after he nearly led them to European football’s premier competition in his first season at the helm.
But once again, Tottenham fell short of Aston Villa despite their progress, showing that there is still much work to be done in the post-Harry Kane era.

Spurs did well to revamp their defense before Postecoglou’s arrival and also added Radu Dragusin from Serie A in the winter, but, now, the task is to upgrade a below-average Tottenham midfield.

Tottenham are trying to jettison some underwhelming players in order to make way for new signings, and one of those players set to leave is veteran Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was on the transfer market in the winter but didn’t receive real interest.

It looks like Tottenham could get their biggest boost yet in their effort to sell Hojbjerg for a meaningful transfer fee, as former manager Jose Mourinho reportedly wants to work with the Danish international again.

According to Turkish outlet Yeni Malatya Gazetesi, Jose Mourinho has told his new employers, Fenerbahce, that they should sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.

Fenerbahce and the other big Turkish clubs are always willing to spend a sizeable amount of money on well-known players from top five European leagues, and Hojbjerg does have a real pedigree of success in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old is exiting his prime and is no longer at the level of a Tottenham starter, but he could be one of the best midfielders in the Turkish top flight and lead Fenerbahce to success.

Tottenham will hope that Mourinho has such great interest in Hojbjerg that he pushes Fenerbahce to spend close to 20 million euros, which could help Spurs make a push for one of their own top midfield transfer targets such as Chelsea standout Conor Gallagher.

Mourinho didn’t have the best time at Tottenham, but he did help them reach the League Cup Final, though he was fired before that Final itself.

Tottenham fans wouldn’t mind if Mourinho gave Spurs this one last gift, a potential financial boost on the transfer market for a player Spurs were having trouble finding a suitable landing spot for.

Hojbjerg gave Tottenham about three seasons of great defensive midfield play, but it is now clearly time for both parties to move on to new chapters.
