Tottenham youngsters send Postecoglou message with trophy triumph

Spurs players will be hoping that their home play-off final victory will have drawn the interest of Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs’ future is extremely bright indeed, as shown by their young players’ home victory of the Premier League 2 championship for 2023–24.

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, the club’s under-21 squad won an exciting Premier League 2 play-off final 3-1 against Sunderland.

Will Lankshear, 19, scored a brace for Wayne Burnett’s gifted young team. Captain and midfielder George Abbott also scored in second-half stoppage time. Ukrainian striker Timur Tuterov added an even later consolation for Graeme Murty’s Black Cats, who twice struck the woodwork through Tommy Watson and Harrison Jones.

Some of Tottenham’s triumphant players will now be hoping that this feat will help them break into the first team under head coach Ange Postecoglou the following season.

During the 2023–24 season, Jamie Donley and Mikey Moore both made brief senior appearances. Donley started for the U21s on Sunday, while Moore is now in Cyprus with England, where he has already scored three goals in two group games against France and Portugal.

Along with Leo Black, Alfie Devine, Donley, Tyrese Hall, Rio Kyerematen, and Yago Santiago, Abbott was one of the Spurs youngsters chosen by Postecoglou to travel to Australia last week for their post-season friendly against Premier League rivals Newcastle in Melbourne.

All those guys came off the bench to get key first-team experience as Tottenham drew 1-1 after goals by James Maddison and Alexander Isak in the first half. Postecoglou’s squad finally lost 5-4 on penalties after Bryan Gil’s spot-kick was vitally saved by Mark Gillespie.
