Boost for Ange and fans: £60M Newcastle man target now prefers to join Tottenham this summer

With Ange Postecoglou’s team qualifying for the Europa League, Tottenham will need a larger roster.

Bild claims Tottenham is ahead of Newcastle in the summer transfer battle to capture highly-rated RB Leipzig center-back Mohamed Simakan.

When Spurs acquired Micky van de Ven from the Bundesliga last summer, they struck gold. Together with World Cup winner Cristian Romero, the Dutch defender soon established himself as a cornerstone of the Lilywhites’ defence.

In German football, Simakan is regarded as a guy on the upswing who can play fullback when necessary in addition to centre back.

According to the Bild story, the 24-year-old is aware of attention from both Premier League heavyweights but would rather relocate to North London so he can play under the dynamic Postecoglou.

To get him to the Premier League and bolster Postecoglou’s team for an intriguing second season in command, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will have to pay his reportedly £60 million release clause.

Radu Dragusin was brought on board by them after he unexpectedly rejected a transfer to Bayern Munich in order to spend the winter in North London.

However, they have not really filled the shoes of the seasoned Eric Dier, who departed the squad in January, and it is thought that the acquisition of Simakan would be perfect for a team that would have more games because of qualifying for European football the next season.

Tottenham started off the previous season with a bang, winning eight of their first ten games until losing to Chelsea and the wheels fell off.
