Hefty bid needed: Spurs weighing up move for £60M+ star, he’s bit more like Harry Kane

Ange Postecoglou’s first season as manager of Tottenham Hotspur ended in disappointment when the team failed to qualify for the Champions League ahead of Aston Villa. That’s mostly because Spurs lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City. If they had won, they would have snuck into fourth place.

That being said, Spurs can still be happy with their season because fifth place is what many fans and neutrals were hoping for. They had a great start to the season. Out of their first ten games, they won eight and tied two. Opta Joe says that Postecoglou’s team got 26 points, which is the most ever by a boss in their first ten Premier League games in charge.

Spurs and Postecoglou have a solid base to build on for next season after this one. Indeed, the needs of European football, in particular a plan from Thursday to Sunday, will return in 2024/25.

In light of this, the summer trade window in 2024 will be very important for the Lilywhites. James Olley, a senior writer for ESPN, says Postecoglou has “asked the club for at least three new signings in the summer transfer window.” This comes at a time when several players are leaving the club.

This past few weeks, Spurs have been linked with a player who could be the start of Postecoglou’s spending spree this summer.

Spurs want to sign a striker from the Premier League

Dominic Solanke is a striker for Bournemouth. The 26-year-old has been on a bit of a whirlwind career so far, but he has found a home at Bournemouth. After a great season in the Premier League, other teams are interested in signing him.

Alex Crook of talkSPORT says that Spurs are one of the teams that want to sign the English player this summer and are thinking about making a move. Bill Foley, the owner of Bournemouth, knows that a deal could be made this summer, even though it would take a “hefty bid” to get Solanke.

In fact, once the transfer window starts, Spurs won’t be the only team in the Premier League that wants to sign Solanke. Reports say that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle team is also very interested in buying the 26-year-old.

Newcastle might have to pay £60 million to get the Cherries to sell Solanke, so it’s likely that Spurs will have to pay the same amount. There could be a big trade drama involving the player who used to play for Chelsea and Liverpool.

How Harry Kane and Solanke compare
This season, Solanke’s play has had some similarities to that of Harry Kane, who used to be the best player for Tottenham.

This season, the centre forward for Bournemouth scored 19 goals in the Premier League. He was only a goal or two behind Erling Haaland (27 goals), Cole Palmer (22 goals), and Alexander Isak (21 goals) for the Golden Boot.

Also, this was Solanke’s best Premier League comeback by a long shot. It’s not even close to 19 goals that the attacker has scored in his six previous Premier League seasons.

Kane scored a lot more goals in the Premier League than Solanke did. Harry Maguire, English partner and captain of the national team, calls Kane “the best striker in the world.” In three of Kane’s ten full Premier League years, the Cherries scorer scored more goals (19) than Kane did. This shows that he can keep up the rate of scoring that Spurs lost when he left.

Stats from Transfermarkt

Aside from his great goal scoring record this season, Solanke has been compared to England’s captain many times in the past. Charlie Daniels, a former player for Bournemouth, said that he is “a bit like Harry Kane” because he “combines the role” of a nine and a ten. He also said that “his movement is the same as Harry’s and they’re the same intelligence.”

When you look more closely at the stats, you can also see how they compare in terms of imagination and link-up play. Sofascore says that both players make one key pass every 90 minutes, but in 2023–24, Kane made 13 big chances while Solanke only made three.

Also, maybe Spurs shouldn’t look any further than Solanke when they need to find a new Kane this summer. It makes sense for Spurs to go through with this deal, and as Daniels points out, they could get another striker like their record scorer.
