‘will be one of the most sensible signings’: Tottenham urged to re-sign 27-year-old defender
Dan Bardell wants Tottenham Hotspur to re-sign Kyle Walker-Peters in the summer.
Ange Postecoglou has had a decent first season at the club and now he is looking to make major changes to his squad to compete with the best teams in the country. The Australian manager wants more depth in his squad and he could look to bring Kyle Walker-Peters back to the club.
The English full-back did come up the ranks at the club but things didn’t work out for him at Tottenham, as a result, he ended up making a switch to Southampton. With his contract at the Championship outfit running out in a year and the possibility of him being available for a cut-price fee, journalist Dan Bardell has urged Tottenham to re-sign the 27-year-old.
While speaking to Tottenham News, he said: “I’d put that under sensible signings for the summer. Tottenham have fallen down a little but at times when they haven’t had their first choice full backs available.
“Porro and Udogie are so crucial to what Spurs do and the way they build up. If one of them or both are missing then Spurs are an infinitely worse side because the people that cover them can’t do what they can do.
“I think Walker-Peters is an intelligent enough footballer to be able to play either role and do what Udogie and Porro do. Maybe not to the same standard but somewhere near it and that’s what Spurs need.
“The fact that he covers both right and left back is a boost. Walker-Peters will be one of the most sensible signings across the entire Premier League in the summer if Spurs can get that done, I think that makes complete sense.”
Bardell feels signing Walker-Peters could be a sensible move for the Spurs who are looking to add depth to their ranks. Their style of play relies heavily on their full-backs and when Destiny Udogie or Pedro Porro are not fully fit, the North London club tends to struggle.
While they do have backup options for those positions, the gulf in class with their first-choice full-backs is immense. Walker-Peters is an attack-minded full-back who is good with the ball at his feet and can feature on both flanks, as a result, Bardell believes the 27-year-old could be an ideal fit for Postecoglou’s team. He might not be as good as Udogie and Porro but he can certainly be a great backup option for them.
