‘Huge sums of money’ – Tottenham expert reacts as £120m+ transfer story emerges
John Wenham believes Tottenham will want to be kept in the loop regarding a transfer for Shakhtar Donetsk midfield gem Giorgi Sudakov, but believes a move could be unlikely.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels that the North London side will be sceptical following Mykhailo Mudryk’s big money transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea.
It comes after The Mirror reported (27 April) that Sudakov’s agent Vadym Shablii met with Spurs to discuss the club’s interest in his client and was even snapped posing for pictures at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Sudakov recently signed a long-term contract extension with Shakhtar which includes a £127.7million release clause.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – claims that this could make a deal difficult.
“We’re talking about big money here, £120million-plus,” Wenham said.
“Shakhtar Donetsk have done well in the transfer market in recent years, attracting a big fee for Mudryk, who I was hugely impressed with before he arrived at Chelsea.
“He had done much more on the European stage than Sudakov has, but yet he hasn’t been able to replicate that form in the Premier League.
“Therefore, I think there’ll be a bit of scepticism about handing huge sums of money over for a player like that, although Tottenham inviting the agent over demonstrates that they are keen to at least be kept in the loop.”

Daniel Levy would usually be reluctant to pay anywhere near £127million for a player.
Therefore, this release clause would likely put the Spurs chairman off.
However, in this day and age, that type of fee is quickly becoming the norm and Levy might soon have to accept that fact.
If Spurs want to compete at the top end of the Premier League they need to start showing more ambition in the transfer market.
And inviting Sudakov’s agent to North London suggests the club might have finally realised that.
