So reliant: Sutton suggests Tottenham have 2 players who are more important than Heung-min Son now

According to Chris Sutton, there are now two Tottenham Hotspur players that are even more crucial than Heung-min Son.

Spurs’ aggressive performance at Villa Park on Sunday has won them a lot of praise.

Ange Postecoglou’s defeated their opponents in the top four 4-0, and Heung-min Son won Man of the Match honors with one goal and two assists.

James Maddison, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, and Son all scored goals in the second half as Tottenham easily defeated Aston Villa.

However, Postecoglou prepared his squad for a valiant performance at Villa Park by pressing Villa high up the field from the opening whistle.

This thus put Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven up against Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey in a 2v2 match.

Both of them, along with Radu Dragusin who came on in the 49th minute to replace the injured Van de Ven, did a fantastic job of handling Villa’s offensive attackers.

Chris Sutton thinks Romero and Van de Ven are Tottenham’s most crucial players at the moment because of this.

Sutton gave an explanation of why, in his opinion, Tottenham’s center backs are more important to Postecoglou’s system than players like Son and Maddison on The Monday Night Club.

“Postecoglou’s most crucial players are the center halves because of the way he sets up his teams; with Van de Ven and Romero, it’s so reliant on them because they have to deal with every eventuality,” the man said.

“I adore Romero, even if he sometimes acts rashly. However, Van de Ven has been one of the season’s biggest additions. He has excellent speed, superb ball handling skills, usually accurate tackle timing, and is a strong all-around player with respectable aerial ability.

“There will be a great loss with him. Tottenham has been able to manage without him missing a significant number of games, but naturally, they have had several injuries to deal with.

“Everyone talks about Postecoglou teams being high-risk, high line, which is why the most important players in his team—Son and Maddison, for example—have to be the center-halves,” Sutton said.

At the opposite end of the field, Son and Maddison are without a doubt Tottenham’s most vital players, but you get where Sutton is coming from.

Without the pair in November and the first few days of December, Spurs found it difficult to successfully build from the back.

Van de Ven and Romero are both excellent at playing out from the back and doing a fantastic job of defending the channels.

Because Postecoglou often leaves his center-backs to handle offensive attackers in 1v1 situations, this is crucial to the way he lines up his teams.
