5 things we learned from Tottenham’s defeat against Wolves
Today’s encounter between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves ended in a painful loss for the Lilywhites as the opposition took advantage of their defensive shortcomings.
After watching today’s dismal match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, we discovered the following five things:
Udogie and Porro are crucial
Although we were aware of the quality of the first-choice full-backs, today’s poor efforts at filling in by Emerson Royal and Ben Davies just served to emphasise how crucial Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie are.
They are ideal for Postecoglou’s daring approach, and today’s injury pair was much missed. Hopefully, they will be ready for the Palace match.
The problem with set-pieces is becoming worse
Another game, another corner goal given up. It’s disappointing that these circumstances are now becoming our weakest point as a team, given how outstanding our set-piece defence has been all season. We continue to be abused because our adversaries have identified a vulnerability. This has to be fixed right now.
Ange has to have effective halftime team talks
Spurs scored a goal back in the second half in less than a minute thanks to a strong start and well-taken goal by Dejan Kulusevski. From then on, Spurs pressed forward and controlled much of the second half.
We’ve seen this kind of situation a few times now, when we behind in the first half then rally well in the second, and the only thing that can explain it is Ange Postecoglou’s outstanding halftime team speech. It’s unfortunate that we were unable to get the victory today.
Spurs need to get Pedro Neto
The Wolves player has been linked to Tottenham all week, and it’s obvious that the crafty winger wants to make an impression today. In contrast to Spurs’ wingers’ lack of imagination, Neto appears like the precise sort of player we are searching for. He exhibited some incredible dribbling and ingenuity to give his team the lead in the second half.
Spurs’ compact defence will be fatal.
Once again, this Spurs squad has struggled to overcome a defence that is tight and well-organized.
Some would argue that Wolves parked the bus, but in fact, the opposition put on a very clever and strong display after receiving explicit instructions to set in a specific manner, and it succeeded. We are lethal in our own right when given enough room, but as soon as that space is limited, our creativity swiftly wanes.
