Club president now confirms 26goal striker a season will leave this summer after Spurs partial agreement
Lille president Olivier Letang has confirmed that Jonathan David, a player widely rumored to be a target for Tottenham Hotspur, will leave the Stade Pierre Mauroy this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in the market for a center-forward this summer, and Jonathan David is one of the names on their wishlist.
The 22-year-old Canadian international has made a significant impact in French football since his move from Gent three years ago, finishing the 2023-24 season with an impressive 26 goals and nine assists across all competitions.
Jonathan David has a release clause of €60m (£50.4m) in his contract, according to L’Equipe via GFFN. However, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the striker might be available for around €40m (£35m), making him a more attainable target for interested clubs.
In addition to Tottenham, Manchester United have also shown interest in securing David’s signature, suggesting a competitive transfer battle this summer.
Olivier Letang, Lille’s president, has confirmed that Jonathan David will leave the club this summer, along with teammate Leny Yoro.
Letang indicated that both players have ‘exit vouchers’ due to their contract situations, suggesting that Lille is prepared for their departures. This announcement provides a significant boost to both Tottenham and Manchester United in their pursuit of David.
While David’s release clause stands at £50m, it is unlikely that any club will pay that amount, especially given that the striker has just one year left on his contract.
A fee closer to £35m would likely be sufficient to secure the Canadian forward’s services, making him an attractive option for Tottenham as they look to bolster their attacking options.
From a strategic standpoint, Tottenham would benefit greatly from signing Jonathan David at a reduced price. Given his prolific scoring record and the likelihood of a lower transfer fee due to his contract situation, David represents a valuable addition to the squad.
Spurs should act swiftly to capitalize on this opportunity before other clubs, such as Manchester United, intensify their efforts.
Securing Jonathan David could be a transformative move for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
David’s proven track record in French football, combined with his potential availability at a reduced transfer fee, makes him an ideal target.
With competition from other top clubs, Tottenham must act decisively to bring the Canadian striker to North London.
Jonathan David’s addition to the team would not only enhance Spurs’ attacking prowess but also align with the club’s long-term strategic goals.
As the summer transfer window progresses, Tottenham’s pursuit of David will be a key storyline to watch, potentially shaping the club’s fortunes in the coming season.
