£19M former wonderkid has not played a league game this season as Tottenham snub backfires

Tottenham Hotspur’s attempt to sign Ilaix Moriba in 2021 seems like a missed opportunity for the RB Leipzig midfielder, as he opted for a move to Germany instead.

Tottenham has been successful in acquiring promising talents for the future, with players like Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, and Pape Matar Sarr making a significant impact in the Premier League.

In the summer of 2021, Tottenham aimed for a double swoop from Barcelona, securing right back Emerson Royal but missing out on midfielder Ilaix Moriba, who chose to join RB Leipzig instead.

Moriba, highly regarded for his box-to-box midfield potential and even compared to Yaya Toure, turned down Tottenham’s offer in favor of the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig paid approximately €22 million (£19 million) to secure Moriba’s services.

Despite the initial optimism surrounding his move, reports just over three months later indicated Moriba’s desire to leave RB Leipzig, setting a challenging tone for his time with the German club.

Moriba spent 18 months on loan at Valencia, scoring one goal in 46 games, before returning to RB Leipzig during the summer. However, he struggled to make an impact in Germany, failing to make a single league appearance before being loaned to Getafe earlier this month.

Due to international commitments with Guinea, Moriba has yet to debut for Getafe, resulting in no club football minutes this season.

Now, Moriba appears to be falling short of the initial hype, raising questions about what might have been had he chosen to join Spurs. Meanwhile, the midfielder Tottenham did sign, Pape Matar Sarr, has flourished under Ange Postecoglou, establishing himself as a Premier League star.

The contrasting paths of Moriba and Sarr suggest that Tottenham has reason to be pleased with the outcome, while Moriba may need another loan move to Spain to revive his career.
